What kind of society is Uma?

The association’s name, Uma, is an ancient name for Umeå.

We are an association that focus on historical re-enactment of everything and anything before the year 1600 AD, e.g. focus right now for members is western Europe and the viking age, medieval age and the renaissance. Our association was founded in 1991.

The purpose of the association is to allow members to make practical use of their historical knowledge, as well as to recreate the environments and ambience of days of yore. This means studies, experiments and practice, but most of all a lot of fun with other creative people.

Uma belongs to the international organisation SCASociety for Creative Anachronism, that was founded in 1966, at the University of Berkely, California. Today SCA has over 30 000 members around the world, whereof about 600 are in Sweden, where it has been established since 1984. The Swedish national organisation is called SKASällskapet för Kreativ Anakronism , also known as the Principality of Nordmark.
